07 TL key fob conversion

Postby 2004blackbeauty on Dec 5th, '06, 10:20

Got this from the v6 performance forum.
I am not the author.

I asked my local Acura dealer for a blank 2006 TL key. they said the key is $40ish + taxes and $85ish + plus taxes (Programming).
The problem is...will they do it for Accord cars.

Credit and pictures go to "shon.nv":

Iam starting this new thread so that its easier to search. I guess I am the first one to do this, here are the details and the pictures.

Part Used: 35111-SEP-306

Total Cost: $46 for the key fob and paid $20 to the guy who cut/programmed it for me

Notes Since we dont have Memory Seats in our cars, the memory function has to be turned off before the remote can be programmed. Simply press the "Lock" and "Unlock" button as the same time until the LED blinks twice.
The only thing that doesnt work on mine is the Glove Box lock, I dont know if the guy didnt cut it right or something but other than that its all good.

there's a writeup @ acurazine in the TSX section as well, but modding it seem to be a pita...

True...but for us 7th genners its actually very easy as posted on V6P. Essentially get the key from Acura, then give it to Honda and have them cut and program it. Since its a laser cut key blank and the 7th gens use laser cut keys no modding is required, and since the immobilizer chip is the same as in the 7th gen keys the dealership can program it with their HDS system as well. Essentially nothing needs to be opened at all for this to work.

I'm going to be calling Acura and seeing what the cost and availability is for the key...and finding out what Honda will charge me for doing the rest. I've always wanted a sidewinder key...

So they want $85 just for cutting and programming (on top of the $40 for the key)? How much just for cutting (immobilizer should technically be possible by swapping one from an Accord key for a DIY solution. Remote programming (door locks, windows, etc) can be done DIY as well).

unless you guys want to drive out to burlington, gb would be keys only, programming i will try to arrange at a honda dealer locally

when i read the title, i thought they swaps keys, as the title "conversion" suggests.. but it's more like a "replacement"

I believe I've read that the fob can be programmed for keyless entry, but for the immobilizer chip, it must be done with the Honda HDS system..

Eternal_Wing, i dun think it will work for 6th gen, the transponders might be different frequency, and I dun think the key is laser cut for the 6th, right?

No 6th gen arn't laser cut keys but there is always away of doing it. Some people on clubrsx did something similar with their key and the 7th gen key. They cut theirs apart
took the chip and put it in the key.

JaiJai, yeah, the TSX guys did the same thing on acurazine, but the guy who did it had to take the blade from his valet key and attach it to the fob, and somehow he had to JB weld the blade in the fob.. but I dunno, if the price is right, i'll probably pick one up and give it a shot!

Yes, that $85 from acura dealer is for cutting and programming.
If possible SillyPuddy please try and ask for a final price for group buy and programming too.

Thanks.

Hi,

Is that $84.82 including cutting the key too?
Or that is seperate?
Please lets me know.

Thanks.

Yes that price includes everything but pst & gst.

Wow...$85 just for programming and cutting...this is starting to get expensive now.

Anyone brave enough to take apart a TL key can see how easy it is to just swap the immobilizer chip from a "donor" Accord key into the TL key (removing the TL key's immobilizer of course)? I remember reading on some forum that this "brand" of key has its immobilizer separate from the main circuit board (type 4 vs type 5 or something)...so that might make getting one of these working a bit cheaper for all of us (if Acura/Honda will cut the key without programming for a lower price)...

acura will sell the keys, but can't program honda keys since every cut / program is reported to acura

honda can do the programming, but can't get the keys.. go figure

Does the key have the Acura "/\ " on the reverse?

Edit: Never mind it does.

I ordered 5 keyfobs..

normal price = $42.85 + 6.00 tax = $48.85

gb price = $37.50 + 5.25 tax = $42.75

I know it's not much off, but better than nothing..

I am going to try to swing a deal over at the honda dealer to cut and program the key.. my acura guy says he doesn't want to do it over there for non-acura cars
