Ontario Performance Parts Ban Coming

Postby Pearly 7M-GTE on Dec 21st, '02, 19:14

Folks, I have not seen any references to this yet on your forum, so I felt it important to bring this up. The Ontario government has tabled new road safety legislation and it threatens our safe and legitimate enjoyment of our cars.

They are attempting to crack down on street racing by banning performance substances and parts deemed to be for racing, or used by street racers, from all road going cars in the province. While I have no inherent issue with anti-street racing legislation, or a crackdown or additional penalties on the participants, I do have a problem when the government proposes to ban parts it deems as for racing.

First problem with the legislation is that, the government is going to try to pass the law without deeming those parts...the list will come at a later date without debate or recourse, and will be open ended. This is the scary part. We as safe, law abiding owners of performance cars who enjoy the pastime of working on and improving or customizing our cars are about to be handcuffed for the actions of the smallest minority.

I am asking you to read up on this, and to write your MPP, the Premier, the Minister of Transport and the leaders of the opposition parties. These people need to hear from us. They need to be shown that we, the responsible owners, must not lose our enjoyment for the actions of a few. If you allow this to pass without a fight, expect to lose your hobby forever.

Street racers will not stop because the parts are not available, but the government will continue to add to the list, telling the general public that they are working to keep them safe. It is a sham, and a cop out. The government to date has been unable to make a significant dent in the racing through enforcement measures, and this law is designed to make the media misinformed public feel good that their government is working for them, especially with a potential April election.

There is a discussion ongoing at Supraforums.com that includes links to the legislation and the things we can do as owners to fight this. Expect that the aftermarket industry will fight, but the reality is that we all need to chip in if we want to show a loud enough voice on this issue.

http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=92224

Additionally, there is an online petition that you can add your name to. Please do recognize that the government will respond more favourably to this if comments such as "Government Sux" are not included. Maturity and the appearance of being responsible owners goes a long way, but be sure to at least add your street and town to the address information. They know then that you are an Ontarian and that you stand against them on this. The petition can be found at http://www.petitiononline.com/sect1722/petition.html. Remember that a petition is a less effective way to speak out, and that government is more likely to consider the letter over the name on the petition. Send your letters and be heard. Governments know that for every letter writting personally, 100 or more are waiting till election time to speak as they are unable to join the fight right now for a multitude of reasons. We must speak for them, and for ourselves.

Thanks you for your attention, and your assistance in saving our beloved, safe, and reasonable hobby.

Thanks to the moderators for getting this a sticky. It should help it get noticed.

We appreciate all the support you guys can give. Remember to hit the petition, but please don't put in comments like "guverment sux", or further insult them...remember that a person is going to read it. A little respect for them will carry more weight, and gives us all a better chance of success than insulting them will ever do. When was the last time you gave someone what they wanted when they flipped you off....

Also remember to send those letters to your MPP, the Premier, the Minister of Transport and the leaders of the opposition parties. There are many form type letters available from the supraforums link, and the site www.ontla.on.ca has a tab that will let you find the addresses of the above politicians, as well as find your local MPP, who is and should be the first person you send a letter to.

Well put together personal letters show that you are committed, and the government gives that more weight than a petition...1 document with 1000 sigs, or 1000 documents with 1 sig each. Which pile do you think has more committment and effort (though the petition is another important tool none the less...keep signing if you have not already).

Remember that Governments believe that for every letter there could be up to 50 more people who oppose them on the issue, but are unable to write themselves for whatever reason. They come out at election time. Be that 50 people today. Speak to the government on their behalf. The more of us they know there are, the better our chances of success.

All enthusiasts thank you for your help in fighting this legislation. The more you fight now, the better your chances of being able to mod your car into the future. Please remember to let everyone you know in on this.

And of course, my personal thanks again guys!

Here is the full bill.
Section 172.1 is the part about modifications to vehicles for performance. IT is extremely Vague.

I find this to be crazy. I got pulled over in one of these Street Racing R.I.D.E. programs,
An hour and fourty mins. later i drive away no tickets and a sense of being harassed by my local law enforcement agency. what a shame.

Ohhh and i'm 3016, on the petition. the #'s are getting up there.

i don't mean to be the sour apple or whatever

but i really dont think a mpp is gonna care if there are a few ppl who truly want to just modify their cars as a past time and not race

the government wants to put a stop to the racing and etc...so they are pretty much going to be ruthless about it and not really care about the few who modify their cars for fun rather than race...

take a look at the whole gun crisis..the are those who like us collect or buy guns as a past time and do not use them to kill ppl...even with the gun registry the govenment knows that they have not made and effect on the number of gun related crimes...still they will continue and punish everyone no matter what...

i hope things do work out...but i'm really doubtful the government is going to care

how can they put the end to racing if you can...

a). Buy STOCK 400hp 4-door sedan (BMW M5 comes to mind and the new E55 AMG and RS6 put the mark even higher)

b). buy 8mpg Naviagators and Esalades with 300+ motors

c). a 380hp blown Mustang Cobra sells for an equivalent of a low-end luxury car

Think this way... they spend how many years criminilizing marijuana and now they slowly realize that strick deregulation maybe the only way to control...

set tougher standards for the mods (making sure wings don't become projectile knifeblades and so forth) and promoting controled enviroment... auto-x and tracks...

Is this even legal? Its so vague! I hope the U.S. doesn't get any ideas from this.
I dont want this to creep over to Masachusetts.

"Prescribed substances, equipment for racing prohibited

172.2 (1) No person shall drive or permit to be driven on a highway a motor vehicle with a prescribed part, containing a prescribed substance or equipped with prescribed equipment in prescribed circumstances."

no matter how many parts they take away, people will still race...
even if they took away all automobiles, people would STILL race remote controlled cars, bikes, motorcylces - they're just lowering the bar... or trying to.

and as far as someone saying that your MPP won't listen... they have to listen, its their job. all an mpp does, is talk to the people in the jurisdiction, get their opinions on certain government issues, and then sit in parliment/chambers and raise their hand whethere their grouping/jurisdiction agree's, or disagrees with a certain bill that is being passed...

so... sign the petition, write your MPP (writing directly to the prime minister, or premier or whatever is a waste of time, you HAVE to go through the governments 'middle man' if you want to make a smidge of a difference...)

CHANGE THROUGH UNITY! -> Remeber That!

yeah it will seriously suck if this DOES pass. We're not as fortunate as Mustang owner's who have a high performance division and great prices on actual FORD PARTS!!! :bangh:
If we went to Honda to get parts, they would cost an arm and a leg and not be nearly as good as aftermarket parts (being such a HUGE industry that it is)

#12870.

"Shootings occur almost every day in Ontario - I don't see a ban of all guns now, do I? There is gun control. People who own guns are registered. Why not take this route with performance products? I would have no problem registering, because I am an anti-street racer - I believe in taking it to the track. Please think responsibly, here - we are not out to harm, we are out to make our manufactured vehicles an image of our own persona. Bill 241 needs review."

I think I summed it up nicely.
