Folks, I have not seen any references to this yet on your forum, so I felt it important to bring this up. The Ontario government has tabled new road safety legislation and it threatens our safe and legitimate enjoyment of our cars.
They are attempting to crack down on street racing by banning performance substances and parts deemed to be for racing, or used by street racers, from all road going cars in the province. While I have no inherent issue with anti-street racing legislation, or a crackdown or additional penalties on the participants, I do have a problem when the government proposes to ban parts it deems as for racing.
First problem with the legislation is that, the government is going to try to pass the law without deeming those parts...the list will come at a later date without debate or recourse, and will be open ended. This is the scary part. We as safe, law abiding owners of performance cars who enjoy the pastime of working on and improving or customizing our cars are about to be handcuffed for the actions of the smallest minority.
I am asking you to read up on this, and to write your MPP, the Premier, the Minister of Transport and the leaders of the opposition parties. These people need to hear from us. They need to be shown that we, the responsible owners, must not lose our enjoyment for the actions of a few. If you allow this to pass without a fight, expect to lose your hobby forever.
Street racers will not stop because the parts are not available, but the government will continue to add to the list, telling the general public that they are working to keep them safe. It is a sham, and a cop out. The government to date has been unable to make a significant dent in the racing through enforcement measures, and this law is designed to make the media misinformed public feel good that their government is working for them, especially with a potential April election.
There is a discussion ongoing at Supraforums.com that includes links to the legislation and the things we can do as owners to fight this. Expect that the aftermarket industry will fight, but the reality is that we all need to chip in if we want to show a loud enough voice on this issue.

Additionally, there is an online petition that you can add your name to. Please do recognize that the government will respond more favourably to this if comments such as "Government Sux" are not included. Maturity and the appearance of being responsible owners goes a long way, but be sure to at least add your street and town to the address information. They know then that you are an Ontarian and that you stand against them on this. The petition can be found at
http://www.petitiononline.com/sect1722/petition.html. Remember that a petition is a less effective way to speak out, and that government is more likely to consider the letter over the name on the petition. Send your letters and be heard. Governments know that for every letter writting personally, 100 or more are waiting till election time to speak as they are unable to join the fight right now for a multitude of reasons. We must speak for them, and for ourselves.
Thanks you for your attention, and your assistance in saving our beloved, safe, and reasonable hobby.
